World & Society
How does the world shape who you are?
Reflect on the society you live in, the communities you belong to, and the ways the world quietly influences who you become.
It is difficult to understand ourselves without also understanding the world around us. We are shaped by our families, cultures, communities, workplaces, and the societies we live in.
Sometimes we follow their expectations without question. Other times we challenge them, resist them, or search for a different way of living.
Reflection reminds us that the world is not experienced equally. Some people move through life with opportunities that others never receive. Some constantly have to prove themselves, while others are accepted without being questioned.
Becoming aware of these differences is not about assigning blame. It is about recognising that our lives are always connected to something larger than ourselves.
At the same time, there is no single world. Each of us lives in many different worlds. The family we grow up in, the friendships we build, the workplace we join, or the community we create all shape how safe, accepted, and understood we feel.
In many ways, we become who our environments allow us to become.
Reflection also asks us to look in the opposite direction.
How do we shape the world around us?
Every conversation, every act of kindness, every difficult decision, and every relationship contributes to the kind of world we create for others. While we cannot change everything, we often have more influence than we realise.
Perhaps reflection begins by asking not only who you are, but what kind of world you help create each day.
Reflection questions
Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
If you could solve one problem in the world, what would it be?
Do you believe the society you live in is fair? Why or why not?
What would an ideal world look like for you?
